Determine Your Job Search Key Words

Most jobs have multiple key words on which you will wish to search.  It is easy to miss some even obvious ones.

  • A search for trainer would be much better as a search for
    trainer, teacher, instructor, tutor, educator
  • Search for keywords, not job titles, unless the title is really a key word.
  • I never search for programmer or analyst, but do for my specific & saleable computer languages or skills.

A great way to discover more job search key words is to use Monsters job search.

  • Run a search using keywords.  Note that on the search results page, there will be a comment
    Search Related Job Titles
  • Add appropriate keywords to your own job search agents.

Use a thesaurus to find synonyms for your keywords:

·         http://humanities.uchicago.edu/forms_unrest/ROGET.html

If given a choice of searching for the keyword within the job title or the entire job ad, choose the entire ad.

  • Too often the job title is something rather generic dreamt up by HR folks, like Applications Specialist III which may have meaning within their company organization, but not to the public.

·         Assume the person who posted the ad was absolutely clueless.

·         Just searching the titles would miss many opportunities.

·         And often words are misspelled.

·          The keyword may be spelled correctly when repeated in the description.

Remember to include your chosen keywords in your own resume.

·        This triggers the employers search agent match on your resume.

Job Search Agents are free, wonderful, marvelous, fantastic time savers for your job search

  • A majority of job search web sites have Job Search Agents
  • You register at the site (free), specify your job search criteria, and give your email address.
  • They email you daily or weekly with the jobs that match your job search keywords. (If given a choice, daily).
  • You click the hotlink in the email to go directly to the site.

Choosing Physical Locations for Your JSA

When searching or setting up job search agents, if there is no way to choose metro area, & your city has lots of cities around it you want included, then consider selecting entire the state.  This works great for Phoenix, as the only other large locality too far away is Tucson. And it also catches misspelled city names.  In a tight market for seekers with few openings, this works great.  If the reverse were true, it mightnt.
